Rudolf Virchow

German physician who founded modern pathology and social medicine.

Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow wore many hats: physician, anthropologist, pathologist, prehistorian, biologist, writer, editor, and politician. Colleagues called him the "Pope of medicine," and he is remembered as the father of modern pathology and the founder of social medicine. He trained under Johannes Peter Müller at Friedrich Wilhelm University. While working at Charité hospital, his investigation of the 1847–1848 typhus outbreak in Upper Silesia created the groundwork for German public health and launched his political and social careers. That experience inspired his well-known remark: "Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing else but medicine on a large scale."

Because he took part in the 1848 Revolution, Charité expelled him the next year. He responded by founding the newspaper *Die Medizinische Reform*. In 1849, he accepted the first chair in pathological anatomy at the University of Würzburg. After seven years, in 1856, Charité reinstated him to head its new Institute for Pathology. He helped launch the political party Deutsche Fortschrittspartei, won a seat in the Prussian House of Representatives, and also gained a spot in the Reichstag. When he opposed Otto von Bismarck’s financial policies, Bismarck challenged him to a duel. Yet Virchow later supported Bismarck’s anti-Catholic campaigns, which Bismarck dubbed *Kulturkampf* ("culture struggle").

Virchow was incredibly prolific, turning out more than 2,000 scientific writings. His 1858 book *Cellular Pathology*—seen as the root of modern pathology—introduced the third tenet of cell theory: *Omnis cellula e cellula* ("All cells come from cells"). This concept, however, is now widely considered plagiarized from Robert Remak. He co-founded the Physikalisch-Medizinische Gesellschaft in 1849 and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Pathologie in 1897. He also launched journals: *Archiv für Pathologische Anatomie und Physiologie und für Klinische Medicin* (with Benno Reinhardt in 1847, later renamed *Virchows Archiv*) and *Zeitschrift für Ethnologie*. The latter is still published by the German Anthropological Association and the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory—societies he also established.

He was the first to identify and name leukemia, chordoma, ochronosis, embolism, and thrombosis. He coined terms like "neuroglia," "agenesis," "parenchyma," "osteoid," "amyloid degeneration," and "spina bifida." Medical eponyms such as Virchow's node, Virchow–Robin spaces, Virchow–Seckel syndrome, and Virchow's triad bear his name.
